In the Bag! Margaret Knight Wraps It Up: 2012 Once Upon A World Children's Book Awards Honor Book

Next month, the Simon Wiesenthal Center/Museum of Tolerance Library & Archives will present the books selected for the 2012 Once Upon A World Children's Book Awards.  Annually, picture books, fiction, non-fiction and poetry books that promote the themes of tolerance, diversity, respect and social justice can be nominated for one of two awards:
  • Book Award for Young Readers  (6-10 years of age)
  • Book Award for Young Adults (ages 11+)

Selections that demonstrate the following criteria are considered for nomination:
  • depict heroic deeds that lead to tolerance and social justice;
  • promote acceptance of social and personal responsibility;
  • show a sense of urgency and empowerment of the individual; and
  • convey the importance of history.
CanLit for LittleCanadians would like to congratulate the following Canadian book for its selection as Honor Book for the Once Upon a World Children's Book Award for Young Readers:

 In the Bag! Margaret Knight Wraps It Up
by Monica Kulling
Illustrated by David Parkins
Tundra Books
978-1-77049-239-4
32 pp.
Ages 5-9
2011

Monica Kulling' story, illustrated by David Parkins, tells of Mattie Knight's determination to have her inventions recognized (and patented) in a time when it was deemed unacceptable and even inappropriate for a woman to be an inventor.

In the Bag! Margaret Knight Wraps It Up will be displayed in the Simon Wiesenthal Center’s library with a silver seal and sold in the Museum of Tolerance bookstore and online site.

Le Prix Tamarac et Le Prix Peuplier: 2013 Nominees

This listing completes the posting of the nominees for the Ontario Library Association's 2012-2013 Forest of Reading® awards.  The two categories and three award programs for French language readers are included here.  The unique covers of so many of these books make me want to relearn my high-school French so that I too could share in the delight of these reads!
